It’s the New Zealand way to care deeply about the planet and take care of it in the best way we can. We want to be mindful of how we impact the planet and inspire others to do the same. That’s why we use tea leaves that are ethical and sustainable, as well as supporting nonprofit projects that make a positive change by restoring our planet.
In short, we couldn’t be happier to partner with these fantastic, feel-good foundations.
We’re honoured to be part of 1% for the Planet, a global collective of businesses, nonprofits and individuals working together to support a sustainable planet. As part of 1% for the Planet, we invest 1% of our yearly turnover into nonprofit projects that create positive change for the environment.
Ti Ora was founded in New Zealand and our teas bring a little bit of New Zealand to your cup. Sadly, New Zealand’s national icon and native bird the kiwi has been declining in numbers at an alarming rate due to predators. And so, we have partnered with Kiwis for kiwi – a New Zealand not for profit that is working to reverse the decline in kiwi numbers – to help save this quirky and amazing bird which we hero in our brand logo.
When you enjoy your cup of Ti Ora you’re helping contribute directly to Kiwis for kiwi who are using these funds to build new kiwi populations in predator-free environments. We’re proud that Ti Ora is not only a delight for your taste-buds, but is also helping rebuild the future population of kiwi.
We’re proud to say our blends are all carbon neutral. This means we measure the environmental impact of making and transporting our blends and balance this out to achieve a net zero carbon footprint (which is a fancy way of saying we don’t add any extra CO2 into the environment). We do this by partnering with EKOS, a New Zealand-based nonprofit that develops zero carbon projects by cultivating indigenous forests in NZ and the Pacific Islands.
You can also do your own bit to reduce your carbon footprint with every cuppa. Simply boil the right amount of water for your cup rather than the whole kettle. Tiny actions like these really do make a difference.
Not only do our pyramid tea bags do a great job at diffusing flavoursome brews, but the bag, string and tag are all made from material that breaks down.
To make sure they biodegrade safely and speedily, they should be composted in an industrial composting plant. That's why we recommend popping them in with your local community food waste collection and avoid composting them yourself. Check your local food waste system if you’re unsure.
All our green and black tea in our Ti Ora blends are from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms. This means that 100% of the tea leaves in our blends are grown and harvested on farms that are required to meet environmental, social and economic sustainability criteria. Tea is so much tastier when you know it’s good for the planet and people who made it.
We’re members of the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP), a nonprofit organisation which brings tea companies together with development agencies, NGOs, governments, and trade unions to form social impact programmes that help improve tea workers’ lives.
We’re also proud to be part of Improving Lives, an ETP-UNICEF Partnership Programme dedicated to improving the lives of women and children in the tea communities of Assam, an important and significant tea growing region. Head over to ETP’s website to find out more about the programme.
